Pregnancy Screening
Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) and genetic carrier screening.Available every Monday morning at Newstead, Brisbane.
Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), also called non-invasive prenatal screening or NIPS, is available at The Mendel Institute every Monday morning.
NIPT is the most accurate pregnancy screening available for chromosome disorders such as Down syndrome (trisomy 21).
Invitae’s NIPT is able to examine your baby’s chromosomes through a simple blood test on the mother.
The Mendel Institute is also pleased to offer genetic carrier screening for conditions that you unknowingly carry, but may pass on to your child. Carrier testing is available for women and couples who are thinking of having a child or are in the early stages of pregnancy.

Requirements for NIPT
- Need to be at least 10 weeks pregnant
- Need to have an ultrasound of the pregnancy to see if there are any surprises, like twins, as this changes how your blood test is interpreted
- Have you GP refer you to see Dr Gabbett here
- Telephone The Mendel Institute to make your appointment
Cost
NIPT is from $150, depending on the number of conditions screened for.
Comprehensive carrier screening is available from $360.
What is NIPT?
NIPT is the most advanced pregnancy screening technology available to examine your baby’s chromosomes. Through a simple maternal blood test, the baby’s chromosomes can be examined for problems such as Down syndrome (trisomy 21).
How does it work?
Doctors have discovered that after 9 weeks of pregnancy, fragments of the baby’s DNA can be found in the mother’s blood. These fragments originate from the placenta, which is made up from the same genes and chromosomes as the developing baby. It is therefore possible to isolate DNA from the developing baby from a simple blood test in the mother.
By examining your baby’s chromosomes, we are able to tell the gender of your baby and, more importantly, exclude the presence of the more common serious chromosomal disorders.
Invitae’s test screens for between 3 and 12 chromosomal disorders. We will determine which is the best test for you at the time of your appointment.
